 The Shores of Lake Side is the 21st century expansion of the old city center. The new city captures the essence of the heritage and culture that permeate the city, from its founding in the 8th century to its protective walls which were established in the 18th century. The legacy of the surrounding region is delineated as critical axis, emanating from the city's shrine, the Holy city of Mecca, as well as the Prophet Mohammed's grandson's shrine, which converge to define a focal point at the center of an 11 square kilometer replenished inland sea.  The 31-square Kilometer development is a mixed-use residential community divided into 6 districts, each with a distinctive theme that compliments the current city and its significance as a religious tourism destination. The districts include new government blocks for the city as well as healthcare and universities. The development will include both leisure oriented hospitality that provide respite for the religious tourist to more pious and affordable offerings for pilgrims.
